In the winter months it can be hard to feel motivated to do much, but Wordleis a simple pleasure we can still enjoy.

Developed by Josh Wardle, a software engineer based in Brooklyn, the game was originally a gift for his girlfriend who loved word games. Initially intended for the couple’s own enjoyment during COVID-19 lockdowns, Wardle soon recognized its broader appeal and launched Wordle online in October 2021.

The game’s popularity skyrocketed within months, with The New York Times acquiring it for an undisclosed seven-figure sum.

Wordle is not only a hit amongst lay people; even celebrities love playing and sharing their results with other A-listers.

Comedy legends and co-stars of Apple TV+ series Palm Royale, Carol Burnett and Allison Janney compared their results almost every day, with Burnett describing the game as “fun.”

“Allison and I, we Wordle,” Burnett told Entertainment Tonight in April 2023. “We just Wordle back-and-forth.”

A new word appears at midnight in players’ respective time zones on the Times’ games app or website. But if one game a day is not enough for you, subscribers can also access more than 1,000 past puzzles from the official Wordle archive.

“We are thrilled to unlock the official Wordle archive for our subscribers,” Jonathan Knight, head of games at the Times, said in May 2024. “This expansion is not just about playing past puzzles; it’s about deepening the connection our community has with Wordle and with each other.”

How to Play Wordle

Players are tasked with guessing a mystery five-letter word—and must do so in six attempts or fewer. They are helped along with a color-coded tile system: green means they have got the letter correct; yellow shows the letter appears in the word but is in the wrong spot; and, finally, a gray tile indicates that the letter does not appear in the word at all.

Below are some clues to help you solve Tuesday’s game, but be warned that the answer appears below that at the end of the article, so please scroll with caution.
