The New York Mets built a starting rotation full of reclamation projects in 2024. This included guys like Sean Manaea, Luis Severino, and Jose Quintana. All three of these pitchers entered free agency this offseason, but only Quintana remains unsigned.

Ryan Finkelstein of Just Baseball recently predicted Quintana to bolt from the Mets just like Severino did. Finkelstein projects Quintana to sign a one-year, $13 million deal with the Toronto Blue Jays.

“Six of the remaining top 20 free agents are starting pitchers. One of them cleared 170 innings pitched last year, and that’s Jose Quintana,” Finkelstein wrote. “There were times last year when the 35-year-old looked like father time was catching up to him, posting a 7.20 ERA in five starts in May, and a 5.63 ERA in six starts in August.

“Still, every time when Quintana endured a rough stretch, he bounced back with a great one. The final run for Quintana was the most impressive, where he pitched to an MLB-best 0.74 ERA across his final six starts from August 25th through the end of the season.”

The Blue Jays need to add talent however they can. They’ve whiffed on a lot of the top names in free agency this winter including Juan Soto and Corbin Burnes.

The starting rotation isn’t the first place the Blue Jays need to add to, but they could certainly afford to add a reliable veteran to anchor the rotation. Quintana wouldn’t be the biggest upgrade, but he could certainly provide stability.
