Kat Dennings recently reflected on her time on Sex and the City and the unexpected perks that came with it.
The 2 Broke Girls star appeared on The View on Tuesday, Jan. 7, to discuss her new ABC sitcom, Shifting Gears. During the segment, co-host Alyssa Farah reminded Dennings, along with the audience, of one of her earliest roles — a guest appearance on Sex and the City.
In 2000, at just 14 years old, Dennings guest-starred in the show’s third season. The episode, titled “Hot Child in the City” after the 1978 Nick Gilder song, featured Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) and her friends reconnecting with their inner children. For Samantha (Kim Cattrall), this came in the form of working with Jenny Brier (Dennings), a wealthy 13-year-old who hires Samantha to plan her extravagant bat mitzvah.
“It was very interesting because, of course, I wasn’t allowed to watch Sex and the City as a child,” Dennings, now 38, told the hosts. “And we didn’t have cable even, our family, so, I really had no idea what the show was.”
Recounting the audition, she added, “I was like, ‘What a weird show. What a weird title.’ And then on the way home, on the train, we saw a building — like, a Sex and the City billboard across the whole building.”
In the early 2000s, the show’s massive popularity meant even a brief guest role could bring recognition. Dennings recalled the unexpected attention she received after the episode aired.
“After I did that and I walked into, like, The Gap in Pennsylvania, people were like, ‘Oh my God, it’s Jenny Brier! Like, give her the employee discount!’ ” she said. “I was getting discounts!”
Though Dennings later became famous for her roles in films like Charlie Bartlett (2007), The House Bunny (2008), and Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist (2008), she joked that her role on Sex and the City remains the only project that ever earned her such perks.
Now known for her six seasons on 2 Broke Girls and appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Dennings is currently starring in Shifting Gears, airing Wednesdays at 8/7c on ABC.
