Netflix‘s American Primeval is certainly not what most people would categorize as a “romance.” The gritty western drama is full of gruesome displays of carnage, gory violence, and casual instances of depravity. Yet, there’s a constant spark of chemistry that pulls seemingly prissy single mother Sara Rowell (Betty Gilpin) and her nobly savage wilderness guide Isaac Reed (Taylor Kitsch) together. The two spend most of the series either bickering like they’re in a screwball rom-com or defying death to save each other. In fact, American Primeval ends with the two finally connecting for a short, albeit sweet, moment.
**Spoilers for American Primeval, now streaming on Netflix**
Sara and Isaac finally — FINALLY — kiss in the last episode of American Primeval on Netflix. Of course, since the Peter Berg-produced and directed show is hardly the happily ever after-type affair, their passion is short-lived. Even though Sara clearly wants Isaac to accompany her, son Devin (Preston Mota), and friend Two Moons (Shawnee Pourier) on their future journey, Isaac cannot. The kiss is meant to be their last, bittersweet farewell.
When Decider asked American Primeval stars Taylor Kitsch and Betty Gilpin about what this kiss meant to their characters, Gilpin quipped, “Vomit in the mouth comes to mind.” Kitsch laughed heartily.
“Yeah, I mean, we need it so much,” Gilpin said, more sincerely. “We deserve it, as the viewers, to have one moment of romance and joy in this crazy world.”
Gilpin went on to explain their characters are “destined to go their separate ways because they don’t live in a world or a society that would allow them to be together in a way that makes sense.” It’s a single moment of connection for Sara and Isaac, after all they’ve endured.
That moment is fleeting, though. Isaac turns back to return to Fort Bridger, leaving Sara, Devin, and Two Moons to continue on west. However, when Isaac realizes that there is one last, living bounty hunter on Sara’s trail, he quickly races to save her once again. Isaac slays the villain, but takes a fatal injury in the process. He dies with Sara.
“In so many ways, Isaac and Sarah, it’s a tragedy,” Gilpin said, before evoking the romance of Longfellow’s “Evangeline.” “They’re sort of ships passing. Even though they’re so different, they have this brief sort of moment of sameness.”
“So that kiss is almost like their one time that they get to live the life that they should be able to live together.”
“And Isaac is just so obsessed with her,” Gilpin joked, prompting Kitsch to laugh again,”that it’s like he’s getting that chance, you know? And Sarah’s happy to oblige.”
And for those of us romantics in American Primeval‘s audience, we’re happy she did oblige.
