Follow continuing coverage of the wildfires in Southern California.
Multiple fires in the Los Angeles area were burning largely unchecked on Thursday, already consuming more than 27,000 acres in Southern California. The fires started spreading rapidly on Tuesday amid dry conditions and strong winds. The two largest blazes, the Palisades and Eaton fires, have destroyed more than 2,000 structures.
Other smaller fires also drew concern, including a blaze in Sylmar, in the San Fernando Valley, and one in the affluent Hollywood Hills neighborhood, which forced evacuations in some areas that attract tourists. (Those orders have since been lifted.)
Tens of thousands of residents across Los Angeles remained under evacuation orders or warnings. Officials have cautioned that the biggest fires were far from being contained.
