A Maryland man won $500,000 in the Pick 5 lottery last month after a sour encounter on the road left the lucky winner playing the license plate number of a disgruntled motorist.
The Glen Burnie man was returning home from out of town in late December when someone cut him off on the highway, resulting in him taking a mental note of the “rude” driver’s license plate number, according to Maryland Lottery officials.
The perturbed technician turned his fury into opportunity when he visited Doc’s F&B Liquors in Glen Burnie later that day and played the numbers across 10 identical Pick 5 tickets that each cost $1.
“I figure if you’re going to play, you should play big,” the unidentified winner told lottery officials.
The Anne Arundel County resident then went home and fell asleep, officials said, adding that he didn’t find out until the next morning that he had won $50,000 on each ticket.
“I scanned the tickets using the Lottery app on the phone,” said the merry winner, who shared the news with his mother upon learning that karma had shifted his way.
The lotto winner said he plans to use some of the money to pay off bills and will invest the rest, officials said.
The retailer will also receive a $5,000 bonus for selling the 10 lucky tickets.
