After winning the Best Supporting Actress Film Golden Globe last night for Netflix’s Emilia Perez, Zoe Saldana revealed backstage that she received a text of congratulations from director James Cameron.

“I was sitting in the audience and I received a message from James Cameron who is somewhere in New Zealand right now, editing Avatar: Fire and Ash. And he after all these years, believes in me. That to me just nourishes my desire to continue growing as an artist.”

The actress expounded that it’s filmmakers like Cameron who’ve kept her going in her career.

“I’ve been in this industry for 25 years. For a moment, I transitioned from being a dancer to an actor. I was in my late teens and early twenties, not knowing what was ahead of me and what I’ve witnessed is I’ve always been employed. I’ve always had good human beings and amazing, undeniably talented filmmakers believe in me and bet on me and trust me — consistently.”

She continued, “I’m 46. There was a moment a couple of years ago when I sort of thinking of plan Bs. Do I go into a homestead and start planting a garden and baking goods, and just become the sexiest soccer mom in my mind. But the truth is I’m an artist through and through, and I need to create every day. If not, I just don’t know what I’ll do.”

Saldana added, “That’s how my loved ones can get the best of me is when I’m allowed to create. I’m indebted to filmmakers like Jacques Audiard that after conversations and auditions and promises that I can do something.”

Emilia Perez has been on a roll since its premiere at Cannes last May where the movie won the Jury Prize as well as a Best Actress ensemble prize for Saldana, Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz and lead star Karla Sofía Gascón. Last night, the Netflix acquisition also picked up wins for Best Musical or Comedy Feature, Best Non-English Language Film and Best Original Song for “El Mal”, in total four trophies.

The gracious Saldana gave a shout out to her fellow Globe nominees in the Best Supporting Actress category during her acceptance speech.
