Being woken up in the early hours is often a disorientating experience, but, for a mom-of-two, it created a bizarre parenting moment.
Half-asleep, confused mother Ash woke up to the sight of her toddler Reuben on a rocking horse at 5:45 a.m. Ash, who asked to keep her last name anonymous, posted a hilarious—and slightly creepy—TikTok video (@atmrw) of her 2-year-old rocking back and forth on the toy horse in his parents’ bedroom.
“He somehow managed to drag this rocking horse into our room without us noticing and started riding it. He was actually facing us initially with this huge grin on his face, which was a little menacing in the dark,” Ash said.
She wrote on the text overlay: “POV [point of view]: It’s 0645 your son’s just woken you up by dragging his rocking horse into your room and riding it like a psychopath.”
Ash later clarified the time discrepancy and told Newsweek that it was actually 5:45 a.m., not 6:45 a.m., when she was woken up.
It is not surprising, then, that the unexpected wake-up call caught Ash and her partner off guard. “We both woke up a little confused, but when we realized, we thought it was so funny. I grabbed my phone and uploaded a video straight away—hence the mistaken time,” the 26-year-old said.
Little Reuben normally has a stair gate on his room, but he was let out by his grandma who was staying with the family over Christmas, “so we really weren’t expecting it,” Ash added.
The clip has racked up over 537,000 views, with many TikTok users describing the scene as reminiscent of a horror movie.
“Giving village of the damned vibes,” one commented. “Horror movie worthy scene here,” wrote another.
Other fellow parents felt Ash’s pain and shared their stories of being woken up suddenly by their children. “I once woke up to my then 3-year-old son, silently hovering mere inches from my face in a Hulk costume, complete with mask and Hulk hands,” one wrote.
“Mine just stares at me in the dark till I wake up it’s literally horrifying,” another added.
Ash told Newsweek that she did not expect the video to garner so much attention: “So many people think it’s very creepy, horror movie vibes. Overall, it’s been a positive reaction; we’ve found the comments so funny,” Ash said.
“[Reuben] finds himself very funny, he’ll do anything to get a laugh, and it certainly worked,” she added.
