The Brutalist took home the award for Best Picture, Drama at the 2025 Golden Globes on Sunday night.

Just before the Best Picture win, The Brutalist star Adrien Brody accepted the award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama in a tearful, emotional speech. Earlier in the night, Brady Corbet took home the award for Best Director. So all in all, it was anything but a brutal night for The Brutalist.

“I’m incredibly moved. I prepared one speech, not two,” joked director Brady Corbet when he took the stage for the second time that night. Then Corbet used his extra time on stage to implore studios to listen to filmmakers—even if they want to make really long films. (The Brutalist is 3 hours and 35 minutes, and includes an intermission.)

“Final cut tie-break goes to the director. That’s sort of a controversial statement, but it shouldn’t be,” Corbet said. “I was told that this film was un-distributable. I was told that no one would come out and see it. I was told it wouldn’t work.”

Corbet continued, “Films don’t exist without the filmmakers. Please, let’s support them. No one was asking for a three-and-a-half-hour film about a mid-century furniture maker. But it works.”

Directed by Corbet (Melancholia, Vox Lux), with a script co-written by Corbet and Mona Fastvold, The Brutalist is a harrowing epic that follows the life of a Hungarian-born Jewish architect and Holacaust survivor, named László Tóth (played by Adrien Brody). As an immigrant struggling to achieve the American Dream, László has his life turned around by a wealthy industrialist named Harrison Lee Van Buren (played by Guy Pearce).

Of the films nominated for Best Drama, you can stream Dune: Part Two on Netflix and Max, and you can stream Conclave on Peacock. The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Nickel Boys, and September 5, are all still playing in theaters, and not yet available to watch online.

It’s been a tumultuous past few years for the drunkest night in Hollywood, but 2025 saw the Globes more or less return to normalcy. Three years ago, NBC opted to drop its annual coverage of the Globes in 2022, after a Los Angeles Times expose revealed that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association—the organization responsible for voting on and awarding the Golden Globes, which has since rebranded as the Golden Globe Foundation—didn’t have a single Black member. The HPFA has since added six new Black voters, and NBC agreed to one more year of broadcasting the show. CBS/Paramount+ took over in 2024, and hosted again in 2025. The 2025 Golden Globes were hosted by Nikki Glaser, and you can watch the broadcast streaming on Paramount+.
