The Alex Bregman sweepstakes is down to about three or four teams, with the most prominent potential suitors being the Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, and Toronto Blue Jays. Each of these teams is captivating in its own way, but Bregman can only sign to play with one ball club.
Deesha Thosar of FOX Sports recently made her prediction for where Bregman would sign this winter. Thosar predicted the star infielder would sign a six-year, $165 million deal with the Red Sox, despite her noting she would be wary of giving him more than five years.
“As for Bregman, the Red Sox seem like the ideal landing spot for the two-time World Series champion,” Thosar wrote. “He would likely have to switch positions and play second base in Boston, but a potential Bregman signing would make the Red Sox contenders in the AL East.
“I would hesitate to give Bregman more than five years since he’s entering his age-31 season, but I think if the Sox are desperate enough, going to six years for around $165 million could make sense for both sides, which would include a reunion with his former Houston manager, Alex Cora.”
The Red Sox have been connected to Bregman for quite a while now. Boston is looking for a right-handed infielder and Houston’s franchise third baseman would be the dream target, especially if it can land him for $165 million.
While it’s doubtful Bregman lands the $200 million deal he’s looking for, $165 million feels a bit low. The star infielder will likely sign for somewhere in between those two numbers.
