The Pete Alonso sweepstakes may be the most followed storyline still going on in and around Major League Baseball. It seems pretty cut and dry that Alonso will end up back with the incumbent New York Mets, but there are also suitors like the Seattle Mariners and San Francisco Giants who could steal him.
Still, the $152 million sweepstakes is captivating the game because whoever signs Alonso is going to land one of the best sluggers in the game. The righty has slugged 226 home runs in 846 career games. He’s good for 35 to 40 home runs per season if he can keep his production up.
Jon Heyman of the New York Post revealed a new suitor in the Alonso sweepstakes. While it seems like Alonso will end up back with the Mets, the emergence of a new suitor could be problematic for New York.
“(Los Angeles) Angels looking at it,” Heyman said recently. “Again, I think it’s the years — possible gap there. They certainly are weighing that. I do believe Arte Moreno does want to get another big bat in there.”
While the Los Angeles Angels may be an interesting team in this situation, they aren’t likely to steal Alonso. The Angels aren’t willing to spend money like the Mets are and Los Angeles has already spent a good bit this winter.
It would be very surprising to see the Angels pay a price for Alonso that Mets owner Steve Cohen wasn’t willing to pay.
