Outlander Season 7 Episode 15 “Written in My Own Heart’s Blood” ends with one of the show’s iconic leads seemingly on death’s door. In the midst of the Battle of Monmouth, the beloved character is shot in the belly, a wound that is difficult to heal today, and a veritable death sentence in the 18th century. Does this mean the Starz show is killing off one of its most important characters? Is that the meaning behind all the ultra emotional sepia-soaked scenes between Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe)? Will one of Outlander‘s lovers finally, really, truly die?

Does Claire die at the end of Outlander Season 7 Episode 15 “Written in My Own Heart’s Blood”?
It certainly looks grim for our intrepid heroine at the end of this week’s all-new Outlander. Much of the episode is spent in emotional flashbacks, in which Jamie and Claire not only affirm their love to one another, but Claire frets about how this time, this battle, simply feels different. She’s, of course, concerned that Jamie will be wounded or killed during the battle. However, Jamie emerges from the Battle of Monmouth unscathed. It is Claire, who bravely insisted on staying with injured soldiers in a “triage” tent, who is shot by a Redcoat.
Her injury — a shot in the stomach — could easily prove fatal in even modern hospitals. In 1778, it’s enough for the army’s official surgeon to write her off as doomed. Claire’s only hope is the sweet Quaker physician, Dr. Denzell Hunter (Joey Phillips), whom she has been diligently advising on modern medical techniques over the course of the season. Jamie literally charges Denzell with saving Claire. “No pressure, Jamie,” Outlander star Joey Phillips quipped when Decider brought up the scene in a recent interview.
Can Denzell save Claire? Will Claire die in Outlander Season 7? Here’s everything we know about Claire’s fate…
Outlander Season 7 Episode 15 “Written in My Own Heart’s Blood” Ending Explained: Does Claire Die?
So is Claire doomed? Is this the end of Claire and Jamie’s epic romance? Or can Denzell somehow save the day?
“It’s such a huge moment for Denzell,” Joey Phillips told Decider, explaining that Claire has been “a touchstone” for the young doctor throughout the season. “Now everything rests on you and you are now the only option left. You know, the doctors have fled. Jamie is begging me to save her life. It’s such a huge thing for him.”
While we won’t find out whether or not Denzell’s efforts will be enough to save Claire until the Outlander Season 7 finale premieres on Friday, January 17, Phillips teased what his character’s strategy will be in the ensuing surgery to come.
“I think he has to just try and remain calm and try and detach himself and be the surgeon and know that he’s capable and he will do everything he can,” Phillips said. “But at the end of the day, it’s Claire that’s on the table, and that is so emotional.”
“For me, as the actor, I was emotional seeing Caitriona laid there and all I wanted to do was whatever I could to make sure that she was okay. I knew that I was going to try my best. And that was like Denzell and Joey sort of merging together.”
Still, you might be wondering: Is Claire going to die? Big book spoilers incoming…
In Diana Gabaldon’s book, Written in My Own Heart’s Blood, Claire is shot at the Battle of Monmouth and it’s up to Dr. Denzell Hunter to save her. In the book, Denzell succeeds and Claire eventually recovers. So Claire lives!
Does that mean that’s what’s going to happen in the Starz series, though? Well, considering that Caitriona Balfe was on the set of Outlander Season 8, we think it’s highly likely Claire pulls through.
