Novak Djokovic’s pursuit of a historic 100th ATP title was unexpectedly halted in the quarterfinals of the Brisbane International on Friday, January 3, 2025. The Serbian tennis legend fell to American Reilly Opelka in straight sets, 7-6(6), 6-3, marking a significant upset in the tournament.

Djokovic, who has been a dominant force in men’s tennis for over a decade, entered the match with high expectations. He had previously secured victories over Rinky Hijikata and Gael Monfils, the latter extending his unbeaten streak against Monfils to 20-0, setting a record for the most one-sided rivalry in tennis history. However, against the towering Opelka, who stands at 6 feet 11 inches, Djokovic struggled to find his rhythm.

Opelka, who has been sidelined for nearly two years due to injuries, made a remarkable return to the elite circuit last year. His powerful serving and strategic play were on full display against Djokovic. The American fired 16 aces, showcasing his formidable serving prowess. He secured the first set in a closely contested tiebreak, 8-6, and dominated the second set, breaking Djokovic’s serve to take a 3-1 lead and ultimately closing out the match.

This defeat is a significant blow for Djokovic, who was aiming to join the ranks of Roger Federer and Jimmy Connors as players with at least 100 ATP titles. The loss also raises questions about his preparation for the upcoming Australian Open, where he will seek a 25th Grand Slam title. Despite the setback, Djokovic remains focused on his goals and is expected to regroup ahead of the Australian Open, which begins on January 20, 2025.

For Opelka, the victory over Djokovic is a testament to his resilience and determination. He will now face Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the semifinals, with hopes of advancing further in the tournament.

In other developments at the Brisbane International, defending champion Grigor Dimitrov advanced to the semifinals after Jordan Thompson retired due to injury. Jiri Lehecka also progressed, defeating Nicolas Jarry in straight sets. On the women’s side, Aryna Sabalenka overcame Marie Bouzkova to reach the semifinals, where she will face Russian teen Mirra Andreeva. Anhelina Kalinina saved a match point to defeat Kimberly Birrell and will meet Polina Kudermetova next. Naomi Osaka reached her first semifinal in nearly three years by defeating Hailey Baptiste at the Auckland Classic.

As the Brisbane International continues, all eyes will be on the remaining matches, with players vying for crucial points and momentum ahead of the Australian Open.
