Jenna Bush Hager offered some sound — if controversial — parenting tips while doling out advice to viewers with Hoda Kotb on a recent Today segment.
The co-hosts were offering advice to a viewer who asked if they could finally tell their friend to “dump the boyfriend who is making her miserable.” Surprisingly enough, Kotb and Bush Hager unanimously agreed that it would not be a good idea.
Bush Hager instead recommended that the viewer share helpful podcasts or books about relationships that would help the friend “take her journey to find the dumping.” Kotb agreed, noting that it would be better to “make fertile ground for them to try and figure it out.”
“The moment you push, the more people back up,” Kotb added.
In fact, the conversation reminded Bush Hager of one “unfortunate boyfriend” she previously dated “for a long time.” According to the Today host, her parents, former U.S. President George W. Bush and first lady Laura Bush, never pushed her to break up with him – no matter how much they secretly disliked him.
“That’s a great parenting thing,” she noted during her conversation with Kotb. “I had an unfortunate boyfriend for a long time and my parents never, I mean I couldn’t even tell that they disliked him so much.”
She continued, “The second my dad knew I was over him, my dad was like, ‘Just gonna make sure you’re not gonna marry that guy.’ And I’m like no! But they waited until I made the decision.”
In fact, Bush Hager’s parents have always been supportive of her relationships. Perhaps a little too supportive, in fact.
The Today host once shared on the show that her parents invited her ex-boyfriend to her surprise 16th birthday party.
“My parents were very creative birthday people which was fun but then it gets kind of awkward because it’s like [they have] the old boyfriend sitting next to the new boyfriend,” Bush Hager said with a cringe.
Kotb could not believe it. “They invited both boyfriends?” she asked with a gasp. “Your parents are wild.”
Today with Jenna and Hoda airs on weekdays at 10/9c on NBC.
