Is 9-1-1 On Tonight (1/2/25)?
Sadly there’s no new episode of 9-1-1 on tonight, Thursday, January 2, 2025. If you tune into ABC at 8:00 p.m. ET, the network is set to air a new episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.
When Does 9-1-1 Return With New Episodes? 9-1-1 Season 8, Episode 9 Premiere Date:
In December, ABC announced its 2025 premiere dates for the primetime season and revealed that 9-1-1 will return with new Season 8 episodes on Thursday, March 6 from 8:00 to 9:00 p.m. ET, right before new episodes of Doctor Odyssey and Grey’s Anatomy.
What Will 9-1-1 Season 8, Episode 9 Be About?
We’re still months away from 9-1-1‘s Season 8 return, so an official Episode 809 title and synopsis are still unknown. That said, we do have some idea of what’s to come thanks to Tim Minear teases and an extended promo that aired at the end of the midseason finale.
When the series returns in March we know that 9-1-1 is planning some sort of hostage situation/serial killer arc, which seems to endanger a pregnant Maddie’s safety. During a recent interview on I’ve Never Said This Before With Tommy DiDario, Jennifer Love Hewitt described her character’s upcoming Season 8 arc as, “The craziest thing I’ve ever done on 9-1-1. The audience is not ready. I was not ready.” Hewitt even said she lost her voice after filming and had no idea the “wild” and “fun” storyline was coming.
Though 9-1-1 will likely shine a serious spotlight on the midseason return’s big emergency, Minear also promised other highly-anticipated storylines will be explored when the series returns, including Eddie’s potential move to Texas, which was teased in the midseason finale.
Minear confirmed that Eddie’s life will still be “in flux” come Episode 9, and though it’s hard to imagine one of 9-1-1‘s core character relocating long-term, the showrunner assured Decider that “Eddie is dead serious about doing whatever he has to do to repair that relationship, so if that means moving to Texas, maybe that’s what he has to do.”
Naturally, Eddie’s best friend Buck doesn’t want him to leave. So Minear also teased a major spiral from Oliver Stark’s character. “Buck is going to be spinning like a top by the time we come back. [He’s] not wanting to be a bad friend, and not wanting to be selfish. There’s just no way he’s not going to spiral about this,” the showrunner explained, noting that Stark’s character will eventually find a sort of distraction, though that may also be short-lived. “He’s going to have to find something to latch onto to keep from completely spinning out of control. And he will find that. He will find that when we come back. And we’ll see about that and how long that lasts — these relationships don’t tend to last all that long.” Interesting…
Though Minear said “[Maddie’s] pregnancy story will factor in not insignificantly in the first two episodes when we come back,” he also confirmed “the Bobby and Athena building a new house story” will be hit pretty hard in Episode 11. “We’ll also get to see Buck dealing with his abandonment issues. And then Episode 10 is just going to be thrilling. It’s going to be a thriller. And by the end of Episode 10, everybody’s life is changed,” he explained.
As for his goal in the second half of Season 8, Minear says he’s aiming “to blow it all the hell apart,” so we highly advise fans use this hiatus to brace for whatever 9-1-1 chaos awaits.
