A new mom trying to film a video showcasing her body postpartum ended up accidentally capturing her husband’s heartfelt reaction instead.
Shyann Purnell, from the small town of California in central Missouri, recently welcomed her second child, Josephine Maelynn, in a process that she says brought with it a “rollercoaster of ups and downs” only made easier by the presence of her supportive partner.
“We are finally getting settled and creating a good routine,” Purnell told Newsweek. “Our first child is learning her way around having a little sister and each day gets easier and easier in that aspect, and my husband being so supportive, present, and active is helping even the hardest parts not feel so impossible to manage!”
Having a present and involved partner can be a huge benefit to the development of a young child. In 2017, a study published in the Infant Mental Health Journal found babies who engaged more with their fathers in the first few months of their lives performed better in cognitive tests undertaken at age two.
But it’s equally important to have a partner who is there for the mother of the child, providing support wherever possible. Purnell need not worry in that regard if the video she subsequently shared to her TikTok, @shyannrenee_ is anything to go by.
It captured a moment that she ended up recording “completely by accident.”
“I had set my camera up to record a video of myself for my own records to track my weight loss or weight gain postpartum and my husband rounded the corner and saw me,” she said. “He instantly knew I was focusing on my stomach and like he always does, he reminded me that my body is different but it’s more beautiful now because I’ve grown two babies! So it was completely genuine!”
Purnell’s husband can be heard on the video telling her: “Don’t focus on that! You look beautiful.”
The response helped the video go viral, amassing over 2.4 million views.
“I hope this kind of love finds me,” one viewer wrote. “Need more supportive men like this in this world,” another commented, with a third adding: “If my man ain’t like this I don’t want him. I love this for you.”
It’s a sweet, genuine moment and one Purnell saw as a “beautiful” reminder of how important it is for your partner to help you through these difficult times.
“We, as women, can be so critical that we forget just what our bodies had to go through to create a child! It takes time to heal and reminding yourself to be patient and give yourself grace can be hard,” she said.
“To have a support partner who can reassure you and remind you how beautiful you are is so important! That’s what makes a good team! Without genuine respect and love for each other, the house can’t be built on a firm foundation!”
