Let’s ring in the New Year.
There are so many ways you can celebrate the end of a year and the start to a new one: You can brave the streets of Times Square to be at the center of the madness, go out in a sparkly outfit to a local bar or pull a Carrie and Miranda, stay in and order Chinese food — all good options. If you want to take the cozy-on-the-couch route, here are some TV specials to watch:
Andy Cohen and Anderson Cooper will be back on CNN to roast each other and gab with fun guests for “New Year’s Eve Live with Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen.” After much back and forth with the network, the duo will be able to drink on air this year, so fingers crossed we get more Cooper giggles than usual. Correspondents will also report live from Florida, Arizona and the Bahamas. While there are sure to be some surprises, we know that Patti LaBelle, Amy Sedaris and 50 Cent will all be making appearances. Starting at 8 p.m. on CNN.
Somewhere near Cohen and Cooper, ABC will host their annual “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest.” Carrie Underwood is set to close out 2024 with her performance, and the Jonas Brothers, TLC and LL Cool J will also be getting onstage. At the Fontainebleau in Miami Beach, Fla., Cardi B will keep the party going. Starting at 8 p.m. on ABC.
CBS’s festivities are headed down south and getting a bit country. “New Year’s Eve Live: Nashville’s Big Bash” will take place in the Tennessee capital with Keith Urban, Kane Brown and Jelly Roll performing. And at midnight, there will be fireworks. Starting at 8 p.m. on CBS.
Instead of live coverage, NBC will air “The Day Drinking with Seth Meyers New Year’s Special,” in which Meyers reflects on the year past, or whatever he can remember of it, by looking back at one of his most popular segments. 11:35 p.m. on NBC.
Let’s rock ’n’ roll, baby.
Though we will officially be in 2025 at this point, the “Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony” will honor all the 2024 inductees. The actual ceremony took place in October, but this program shows Mary J. Blige, Cher, Dave Matthews Band and others as they get their flowers. Thursday at 8 p.m. on ABC.
Real estate and the city.
The real estate savvy and workplace fights we’ve seen on “Selling Sunset” and “Selling O.C.” are now coming to the Big Apple on “Selling the City.” The plot of the reality show follows agents from the real estate brokerage Douglas Elliman as they fight for listings, clients and buyers. This time they’re competing not for beachfront mansions or luxury houses in the Hollywood Hills but for penthouse apartments and historic brownstones. Streaming on Netflix on Friday.
Award season begins.
Lucky for Moira Rose, the matriarch in “Schitt’s Creek” who answered “awards” when asked her favorite season, the time is here. Just five days into the new year, banquet halls, shiny statuettes and speech-cut-off music are back with the Golden Globes. Celebrating both television and film, you’ll likely be able to spot your favorite stars in attendance.
On the movie front, “Emilia Pérez” and “The Brutalist” are up for the most awards with 10 and seven nominations, respectively. For television, “The Bear” is up for five awards, and “Only Murders in the Building” and “Shogun” could take home four. In his Projectionist column for The New York Times, Kyle Buchanan noted the major snubs and surprises this year: “Sing Sing” didn’t score a best picture nomination; “The Substance” had a strong showing; and Denis Villeneuve did not receive a director nomination for “Dune: Part Two” despite the film being nominated for best drama and score. The comedian Nikki Glaser is set to host. Sunday at 8 p.m. on CBS and available to stream on Paramount+.
