The State Funeral of former President Jimmy Carter will take place over nearly a week, including several public viewings in Atlanta and Washington.
Carter, the 39th president of the United States, died on Sunday at age 100.

The funeral will begin on Saturday at 10:15 a.m. ET with the arrival of the Carter family at the Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus, Georgia. Current and former special agents of his Secret Service detail will carry his remains and walk along the hearse as it leaves the medical center.
The motorcade then will travel through Carter’s hometown of Plains, with a brief pause at his boyhood home at 10:50 a.m., where the National Park Service will salute him by ringing the farm bell 39 times.

After that, Carter’s remains will be taken to Atlanta, making a stop at the Georgia State Capitol for a moment of silence including Gov. Brian Kemp and other state and local officials.
His remains then will be taken to Carter Presidential Center for a service at 4 p.m. He will then lie in repose for a public viewing from 7 p.m. ET through 6 a.m. ET on Tuesday, Jan. 7.
On Jan. 7, the Carter family will travel to Washington, D.C. on Special Air Mission 39, arriving at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland at 12:45 p.m. ET. They will then travel by motorcade to the U.S. Navy Memorial, where his remains will be transferred to a horse drawn caisson for a funeral procession to the Capitol. There, members of Congress will pay their respects for a service starting at 3 p.m. ET.
Carter then will lie in state at the Capitol Rotunda from 7 p.m. ET to midnight, and then from 7 a.m. ET on Jan. 8 to 7 a.m. on Jan. 9. The public will be invited to pay their respects as he lies in state.
On Jan. 9, Carter’s casket will be taken to Washington National Cathedral, for a funeral service starting at 10 a.m. ET.
After the service, Carter’s family and the late president’s casket will be flown to Fort Moore, GA, for a private funeral service at 3:45 p.m. ET at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains. The motorcade then will travel to the Carter residence for a private interment at the Carter residence at 5:20 p.m. ET. Before the interment, the U.S. Navy will conduct a missing man formation flyover in honor of his naval service and time as commander in chief.
