Ford Motor Company sold the U.S.’s most popular vehicle in 2024, the company claims. This year also marks the 48th consecutive year that the Ford F-Series has held the crown as America’s best-selling truck. The company’s Ford brand has sold more than 33 million F-Series since 1977.
The company’s F-Series brand is comprehensive of a range of trucks from the Ford F-150, which recently entered a new generation and is available as a hybrid, to the Super Duty work specialists. The Ford F-150 Lightning, an all-electric truck, and Ford F-150 Raptor, an off-roading specialist, are also part of the family.
“After 48 years of leadership, Ford’s F-Series trucks have always taken the lead through our Built Ford Tough DNA and innovation and that still stands today with the industry’s most diverse Powertrain offerings for customers. We thank our loyal Ford customers for again making us the number one truck in America. We don’t take that for granted. It drives us to continually be innovating,” Robert Kaffl, director of U.S. sales at Ford told Newsweek.
Ford faced stiff competition from General Motors this year. The company reported at the end of the third quarter that it was America’s top full-size truck seller with their best year-to-date sales since 2007.
The automaker’s Chevrolet brand introduced a new, less expensive version of its Silverado EV pickup in the fourth quarter. Its upscale GMC brand gained market share this year by selling its most expensive trucks to more customers with over 50 percent of buyers choosing high-cost Sierra AT4, AT4X, Denali or Denali Ultimate models.
Ram truck sales are down 19 percent year-over-year as of Q3. The brand’s parent company, Stellantis, continues to struggle to regain its sales footing after a number of executive changes that ultimately resulted in Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares resigning ahead of his planned 2026 exit.
Ram has a new brand head, Tim Kuniskis, who returned to the company from retirement following Tavares’s exit. Shortly after his return, the company announced that it was pushing up the launch timing of its Ramcharger pickup truck and pushing back the launch of its Ram 1500 REV battery-electric truck.
In addition to the Ford trucks, the best-selling vehicles in the U.S. are typically the Tesla Model 3, Tesla Model Y, Toyota RAV4, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Camry, Honda CR-V, Honda Civic and Hyundai Tucson, in no particular order. The Ford Explorer and Ford Maverick have also been hot sellers in 2024.
Full year earnings results for most automakers are expected in the first quarter of 2025. Final 2024 sales figures for the brands will be revealed ahead of those earnings.
