Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos are one of the most affectionate couples on daytime TV, but they proved this morning that there’s always room for growth. Today’s episode of Live with Kelly and Mark kicked off with a conversation between the married co-hosts about the most successful relationship phrases.
After briefly noting that today marks National Leftovers Day, the pair launched into a chat about communication as Consuelos read off the six phrases used by “couples in a successful relationship.”
Ripa was eager to hear as Consuelos read off number one on the list: “I’m going to tell you something that may be upsetting to hear.”
His wife admitted, “We never say that to each other,” and Consuelos agreed, saying, “We don’t do that.” But Ripa revealed to the audience that Consuelos instead uses the phrase, “I told you that, you just forgot.”
The couple gave us more insight into their relationship with Consuelos said Ripa sometimes grants him “immunity.”
“I’m like, ‘Do you really want to know the answer to this question?’” he told viewers. “And she’s like, ‘Yeah!’ And it’s usually like, ‘Why do men do this?’ And I’ll say, ‘Immunity.’ And she says, ‘Immunity.’”
Turning to Ripa, he noted, “You’ve been very good [about granting immunity].”
When it came to one phrase on the list, Consuelos said he would never use such words. After reading off, “It’s understandable you feel that way” from the list in his hand, the daytime host told the audience, “Uh, I don’t think I’d ever say that.”
And the next item in his notes didn’t seem to resonate with him, either. After reading aloud, “I never thought of things that way,” Consuelos nodded and let out a “hmm,” but Ripa couldn’t pass up the opportunity to get in a little jab at her co-host.
“With you it would just— ‘That way’ would be left off,” she said. “You’d be like, ‘I never thought of things.’”
Consuelos laughed out loud at the joke and the audience joined in as Ripa gave a sly smile. Never a dull day with these two!
