What’s New
Winter weather advisories were in place for at least 14 states across the U.S. from the National Weather Service (NWS) early on Tuesday, with up to 18 inches of snow forecast for parts of the country.
Why It Matters
NWS winter weather advisories are issued “for any amount of freezing rain, or when two to four inches of snow (alone or in combination with sleet and freezing rain), is expected to cause a significant inconvenience.”
Millions of Americans are expected to travel for the holiday season this year.
With Christmas fast approaching, many Americans are likely already en route to their destinations, making the weather forecast for the coming days especially important for travel plans.
What To Know
At time of writing, the states with regions under weather advisories were Alaska, California, Nevada, Washington, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, New Jersey, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Delaware, and Maine.
While anticipated snowfall varied from state to state, the NWS forecast snow accumulations of between 12 to 18 inches in Alaska in the Upper Kobuk Valleys and Lower Koyukuk Valley.
The service said to expect heavy snow and blowing snow, with winds gusting as high as 35mph.
“Travel could be very difficult,” it warned.
Winter storm warnings, which the NWS issues “when a significant combination of hazardous winter weather is occurring or imminent,” were also in place for parts of California, Maine, and Vermont.
