The St. Louis Cardinals are reportedly trying to trade their star third baseman Nolan Arenado in an attempt to clear some money from their books. The New York Yankees emerged as a potential suitor, though it’s unknown if Arenado would waive his no-trade clause on a deal to the Bronx.
Instead of the Yankees, a different American League East team could swoop in and steal the third baseman from St. Louis.
The Boston Red Sox are a very intriguing suitor in the Arenado sweepstakes. They’re reportedly quite interested in Alex Bregman and they haven’t spent any money this winter. The Red Sox have the need and they have the money, so a blockbuster deal could make sense.
Here’s a deal that could send Arenado to the Red Sox, leaving the Yankees watching:
- Boston Red Sox acquire: 3B Nolan Arenado, $17 million
- St. Louis Cardinals receive: RHP Richard Fitts (No. 10 prospect)
In this deal, the Red Sox would acquire Arenado and $17 million to help pay for the rest of his contract. For the Red Sox to make this deal, we would also have to assume they’re trading away Triston Casas to acquire a starting pitcher. That would free up first base for Rafael Devers to slide over while Arenado slots in at third base.
In return, the Cardinals would be acquiring pitching prospect Richard Fitts. Fitts is the Red Sox’s 10th-ranked prospect.
The right-hander has been excellent in nearly 400 career minor-league innings. He cracked the big leagues for four starts in 2024 when he posted a sub-2.00 ERA in about 20 innings. But he had a high walk rate and a low strikeout rate, so it’s tough to judge how he’d translate over a full season.
This deal benefits everybody involved except for the Yankees, who would be forced to watch their arch-rivals add one of their biggest trade targets.
