A woman was shocked when the passenger in front of her on a flight appeared to be using a vape during the journey.
Alaina, 22, who is from Maine, was on an American Airlines connecting flight from Chicago to Fargo, North Dakota, to visit a friend when she recorded the video, which has received more than 1.4 million views since November 2.
“I had never seen this happen before,” Alaina told Newsweek. “At first, I noticed this vapor coming from her nose. I wasn’t sure if there may be a medical device I was unaware of so I minded my business.
“I started noticing it more, even as the flight attendant handed out drinks. During our descent, it caught my eye again, and recognized the device was a Vuse vape like the ones you get from a gas station.”
Newsweek has contacted American Airlines for comment via email.
The short clips shows a woman in front of Alaina pulling a small device up to her mouth.
“I didn’t know what to do but laugh in shock with the nice lady across the aisle from me. It was so obvious and out there at times,” Alaina said. “I chose to keep quiet as we only had one flight attendant, and we’re close to our destination.”
American Airlines does not permit the use of vapes and e-cigarettes on their flights, as per the company’s baggage policy.
According to the peer-reviewed research publisher Emerald Insight, there were 82 million vapers worldwide in 2021. Many vapes contain nicotine, which makes them addictive like cigarettes.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that e-cigarettes and vapes can contain “harmful and potentially harmful substances,” which include “cancer-causing chemicals and tiny particles that can be inhaled deep into lungs.”
Alaina’s video got a huge online reaction, and over 1,000 people took to the comments to share their thoughts.
“I’d be snitching. I don’t want to smell your fruit breath,” posted AJ.
Wicket W. Warrick commented: “Entitled people having absolutely no consideration or respect for others is exactly why society is the way it is. There are laws for a reason.”
“And here’s me too afraid to carry a pen/vape shaped anything through TSA at all,” French Whisk wrote.
“Vaping is the most cringe thing ever, give me some fruity air,” commented @user5128458222816.
Krie wrote: “If people learned to not smoke on flights people can manage to not vape.”
Reece Abby Baggs shared: “My dad did this and had his vape removed until the end of the flight.”
