A small plane crash killed two people on Tuesday near the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu, Hawaii, officials said, after a training flight for a local cargo carrier crashed shortly after takeoff.
Video of the crash shows a small prop plane veering sharply off course and away from a busy highway before crashing, causing a large fireball.
Kamaka Air, the cargo carrier that operated the flight, services Hawaii with local shipments and charters between the islands. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported that the plane’s journey on Tuesday afternoon was meant to be a training flight.
“It is with heavy hearts that Kamaka Air confirms the loss of two members of the Kamaka Air family in an accident at 3:13 this afternoon near the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport,” the carrier said in a statement posted on X.
In radio transmissions from the flight published by local news outlets, the pilot of the Kamaka Air flight tells air traffic officials that he has lost control of the plane.
“Kamaka 689, you’re turning right, right?” an air traffic controller asks.
“We are…we have a…we’re out of control here,” the pilot broadcasts back, in his last statement before the clip ends.
State transportation officials lauded the pilot of the flight, the Star-Advertiser reported, and said a bigger tragedy was avoided when the plane was redirected away from crowded public areas. The building in which the plane crashed was reportedly abandoned and set for demolition.
Kamaka Air declined to name the pilots, and asked for privacy for their families.
