On October 18, 2024, Billie Eilish sat down with Vanity Fair for the eighth time, and this time around, the pop star had a bit of news to share. Earlier this year, her album Hit Me Hard and Soft rocketed to the top of the Spotify charts, and for the first time, she had more than 100 million monthly listeners on the platform. At this year’s Academy Awards, Eilish and her brother and collaborator, Finneas, nabbed the trophy for best original song for their contribution to the Barbie soundtrack, “What Was I Made For?”, making them the youngest people to ever win two Oscars.
But when she was looking back at her year, making new friends stood out among everything else. Eilish says it was “a year filled with friendship” amid the new heights for her career. “Even though I was saying a lot of things that I wanted to do, that was the real thing that I wanted to do, and I really did it,” she adds. “And yes, I’ve had a lot of good sex. You’re welcome, Billie.”
In one never-before-released clip from 2023, Eilish said that she disliked working on collaborations with other artists. In 2024, she explained that she did finally enjoy one collaboration, her guest verse on the Charli XCX song “Guess” from Brat and it’s the same but there’s three more songs so it’s not. “It’s Charli though!” Eilish says. “Charli and I did this collab in the greatest way possible.”
Looking back on a clip from 2019 where Eilish said that receiving her touring schedule made her cry, she explains that she used to dislike that aspect of her job. “Touring used to be something that was extremely unpleasant, and I would dread it, and I would only dread it,” she says. “The only reason I did it at all is because I love performing, and even when I dreaded those tours and hated the whole process, I loved performing at the end of the day.”
Before the Hit Me Hard and Soft tour kicked off in September 2024, she decided to change her approach. “I had this moment a year or two ago—a year ago, I think—where I was like, Touring doesn’t have to be miserable,” she says. “I’m the fucking boss. Let’s figure out all the ways to make this fun because this is my job and my life.” After a few changes to her approach in scheduling, Eilish is happy with how everything has turned out. “I’ve created a surrounding that is just, like, joyous and filled with laughter and love. And for the first time in my life, the words are coming out of my mouth: I wish this tour would never end!”
Looking back on the 16-year-old version of herself who sat down with VF in 2017, Eilish expressed some surprise. “I can’t believe the way my life has gone and where it is now,” she says, with a laugh. “I mean, it’s the craziest fucking thing in the world!”
