The Oscar-winning actor, singer and comedian Jamie Foxx was recovering after a physical altercation at a restaurant on Friday night in which someone from another table threw a glass that hit him in the mouth, a representative for the entertainer and the police said.
The episode happened while he was celebrating his birthday, his representative said in a statement on Sunday. Foxx turned 57 on Friday.
“He had to get stitches and is recovering,” the statement said. “The police were called and the matter is now in law enforcement’s hands.”
The Beverly Hills Police Department said on Facebook that it had responded to “a reported possible assault with a deadly weapon” at the restaurant Mr. Chow in Beverly Hills just after 10 p.m. on Friday. The department did not name Foxx.
“Upon investigation, officers determined that the reported assault with a deadly weapon was unfounded,” the department said. “Instead, the incident involved a physical altercation between parties.”
The department said that it had “conducted a preliminary investigation and completed a report documenting the battery.” No arrests have been made, the police said.
No further details were available about what happened leading up to the glass being thrown.
Representatives for the restaurant did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Sunday.
The episode took place days after the entertainer shared his health struggles from last year in “What Had Happened Was…,” his new Netflix special, which debuted on Dec. 10.
In April 2023, Foxx was hospitalized in Atlanta with what his daughter described on Instagram as a “medical complication.” No further details were released at the time, which prompted rumors and conspiracy theories.
His Netflix special was filmed in a theater a few hundred yards from the hospital where he said his life was saved. In the show, he explained that he had experienced a brain bleed, suffered a stroke and temporarily lost the ability to walk. He said he didn’t remember 20 days of his life.
On Sunday, Foxx thanked his followers on Facebook for their support and prayers.
“The devil is busy but I’m too blessed to be stressed,” he said, adding: “The devil is a lie. Can’t win here.”
The actor is probably best known for playing various characters on the sketch comedy show “In Living Color,” which ran from 1990-94, and for portraying the musician Ray Charles in the 2004 biopic “Ray,” for which Foxx won an Academy Award for best actor.
