The New York Yankees have pivoted to their emergency backup plan after whiffing on re-signing superstar outfielder Juan Soto. And this plan has gotten off to a great start.
New York has added Max Fried and Devin Williams over the last few weeks and it’s eyeing multiple more free agents as well. One of the top names on the Yankees’ radar is reportedly first baseman Christian Walker. Walker would fill a massive hole at first base for Yankees manager Aaron Boone and New York is reportedly favored to land him.
Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller doesn’t believe Walker will end up with the Yankees though. Miller recently predicted Walker would bypass the Yankees and sign a three-year, $75 million deal with the Washington Nationals.
“The Yankees are probably the best bet here given their first-base situation, but this could be a fantastic spot for the Washington Nationals to join the offseason proceedings with perhaps a modest overpay,” Miller wrote. “Not only have the Nats needed a first baseman for a while now, but Walker could be the veteran leader of a roster where possible closer Derek Law (34) and reserve outfielder Alex Call (30) are the only players not in their 20s.”
The Nationals may have to overpay even a little bit more than this. To steal the Yankees’ top first base target from them would be costly, but it would be a huge move for Washington.
Washington has a very talented young core with more players making their way up the ladder of the farm system. Adding Walker would give Washington a reliable veteran in a clubhouse full of young prospects.
