From a cat being his owner’s “sous chef” during a baking session to a dog who has life-saving skills for snowy mountains, we’ve seen plenty of action-packed pet stories this week.
Our readers’ submissions of pet stories, videos and pictures have been keeping us entertained as we’ve put together our Pet of the Week.
If you want your pet to be in next week’s line-up, follow the instructions at the end of this article.
Winner
This week’s Pet of the Week winners are Edji and Kairo. In a heartwarming video, small but assertive shih tzu mix Edji proves that size doesn’t determine leadership.
Grabbing hold of Kairo, a much larger Siberian Husky’s leash, Edji gives it a playful tug—showing exactly who is in charge despite their size difference.
“They have a lot of playtime together. They are very playful,” owner Resi Agustin told Newsweek.
As well as defying stereotypes of what a little dog can do, Agustin said that Edji loves hanging out in an air-conditioned room.
Finalists
Our first finalist this week is Hazel, a lively and quirky pup who has a big voice and ever-wagging tail.
Her owner Tes Bryant told Newsweek that her favorite thing is to visit her best dog friend. “She gets crazed—so happy and silly. When it’s time to go, she even hides from me,” she said with a laugh.
To keep Hazel content, Bryant admits to spending a lot of time at her friend’s house. “Yes, she’s spoiled,” she added.
Next up this week is Mazylue, affectionately known by her owners as “Crazy Lue.”
A year-old Australian shepherd who keeps her family entertained, owner Kimber Thivierge told Newsweek: “She’s the craziest dog I’ve ever owned.”
Mazylue has a knack for mischief, targeting specific household items: one shoe, a spatula or an oven mitt. True to her playful nature, she sneaks her prize outside and leaves it on the trampoline, a habit she’s had since she was 6 weeks old. The family often discovers these “treasures” hours later.
Despite having successfully “passed” puppy training, Mazylue hasn’t abandoned her cheeky ways, but her family wouldn’t change any of them.
Last but not least this week is Salem, an affectionate cat who lives with owner Rebecca Keep and her husband.
“Salem NEVER leaves my side,” Keep told Newsweek, explaining that he wakes her every morning with gentle face licks and sleeps in her bed. He’s so in tune with their lives that he eats what they eat and insists on drinking water straight from the sink.
Though Rebecca has always heard that dogs are “man’s best friend,” she wholeheartedly disagrees when it comes to Salem.
The couple, who have been trying to start a family since getting married, find comfort and hope in how well they’ve cared for Salem. He’s brought them so much joy, and they look forward to growing their family—hopefully very soon.
