Sarah Michelle Gellar might not be done with saving the world from the forces of darkness.
While discussing her role in the prequel series Dexter: Original Sin, the Golden Globe nominee admitted she can now see how returning to the Buffy the Vampire Slayer universe could work.
“It’s funny, I always used to say no, because it’s in its bubble and it’s so perfect,” she explained on The Drew Barrymore Show. “But watching Sex and the City and seeing Dexter, and realizing there are ways to do it, definitely does get your mind thinking, ‘Well, maybe.’”
Gellar agreed Buffy wouldn’t necessarily need a prequel series in order to come back. “No, it could be anything. It’s a universe. And it makes you realize that in this world, we need those heroes, I think, more so than ever,” she added.
Based on Joss Whedon‘s 1992 movie of the same name, which Barrymore revealed she auditioned for, Buffy the Vampire Slayer ran for seven seasons on The WB from 1997 to 2003. It followed the titular Valley girl as she relocates to Sunnydale High School, which sits on top of a Hellmouth, providing plenty of supernatural evil for her to slay.
Just last year, Gellar was opposed to the idea of revisiting Buffy’s world. “I am very proud of the show that we created, and (a revival) doesn’t need to be done,” she told SFX Magazine in January 2023.
“We wrapped that up. I am all for them continuing the story, because there’s the story of female empowerment,” added Gellar. “I love the way the show was left: ‘Every girl who has the power can have the power.’ It’s set up perfectly for someone else to have the power. But like I said, the metaphors of Buffy were the horrors of adolescence. I think I look young, but I am not an adolescent.”
Meanwhile, Dolly Parton, who served as a silent producer on the series, has said that a revival is definitely possible. “They’re still working on that. They’re thinking about bringing it back and revamping it,” she told Business Insider earlier this year.
