In a monumental gesture of goodwill, NASCAR legend Richard Petty has made a remarkable donation, gifting 403 acres of land to Victory Junction, a camp dedicated to serving children with serious illnesses and chronic medical conditions.
Located in Randleman, North Carolina, this nonprofit camp has been a beacon of hope for countless families, offering life-changing experiences and a respite from the challenges of their daily lives. This latest contribution from Petty, known affectionately as “The King” of NASCAR, signifies a deep-rooted commitment to ensuring that Victory Junction can continue to expand its mission of care and outreach.
Victory Junction’s inception traces back to the endearing vision of Adam Petty, Richard Petty’s grandson. Inspired by his visit to Camp Boggy Creek in Florida in 1999, Adam was driven to create a similar sanctuary for children in his home state of North Carolina. Tragically, Adam’s life was cut short in a racing accident at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in May 2000, when he was just 19 years old. Despite this heartbreaking loss, his family rallied around his dream, spearheading efforts to bring Victory Junction to life.
With an initial donation of 84 acres from Richard and his late wife, Lynda, the Petty family launched a capital campaign, garnering support from NASCAR allies and philanthropic contributors. Their efforts culminated in the opening of Victory Junction in June 2004. Reflecting on the camp’s impact, Kyle Petty, Adam’s father and an influential NASCAR driver in his own right, highlights the profound joy and inspiration it continues to bring.
“When I see the joy and the smiles this camp brings to kids and their families, I can still feel Adam’s giving spirit and see his smile,” he said. His determination to see the camp thrive far into the future is evident as he states, “I want to make sure the camp is here in 100 years, and we hope this gift inspires others to support Victory Junction, so it remains a place of joy for generations to come.”
Richard Petty’s recent donation significantly increases the camp’s potential, adding to its original 140-acre space. Though there are no immediate plans for development on the new parcels adjacent to the camp, Victory Junction’s leadership sees this acquisition as a fundamentally strategic move for the camp’s long-term sustainability. The board chair, Mark Curran, articulates this vision.
“As we envision the future of the camp, the land will remain a topic of strategic discussions. We will be sure to use this thoughtful gift in ways that both secure the future of camp and provide even more life-changing camp experiences for children.”
By expanding the camp’s physical footprint by 287%, this substantial land donation ensures future generations of families can benefit from the sanctuary Adam dreamed of creating. Nestled 20 miles south of Greensboro and 91 miles northeast of Charlotte, Victory Junction’s location within North Carolina’s NASCAR heartland further strengthens its ties with the regional community.
The camp, often celebrated for its diverse range of activities, including arts and crafts, boating, and NASCAR-themed areas, operates under the vigilant oversight of comprehensive medical supervision to assure the safety of all its attendees. This setting becomes a transformative playground, where children can leave behind their medical concerns and immerse themselves in fun and friendship.
Looking ahead, Richard Petty discusses the broader intentions behind the donation. “We hope to ensure the camp can continue serving even more children for generations to come,” he said.
