The New York Yankees have already moved on from missing out on Juan Soto, agreeing to sign starting pitcher Max Fried to an eight-year, $218 million deal. However, general manager Brian Cashman needs to make additions to the Bombers’ offense. Could he swing a deal with the Houston Astros for outfielder Kyle Tucker?
The Astros are rumored to be open-minded about the possibility of trading Tucker. He’s estimated to earn $16.7 million in 2025 and will be a free agent next winter. Two teams that have shown interest in the left-handed slugger include the Yankees and Chicago Cubs.
What could it take for the Yankees to land Tucker, even if it’s only for one season? FanSided’s Adam Weinrib outlined what he thinks a hypothetical “painful” package might look like:
– Yankees receive: outfielder Kyle Tucker
– Astros receive: outfielder Jasson Dominguez, right-handed pitcher Chase Hampton and left-handed pitcher Henry Lalane
According to Weinrib, the “painful” part of this deal would be giving up Dominguez, who could play a major role on the Yankees’ 2025 squad without Soto in the Bronx. While New York could offer top prospect Spencer Jones, his value has fallen a bit after a rough 2024.
“While it sounds unnecessarily painful at first blush, Jasson Dominguez is certainly the more enticing option. His 2023 cameo made him look like an essential part of the Yankees’ fabric, but he lost almost the entire 2024 season to Tommy John surgery and an oblique issue and hit .179 with suspect defense when he was active,” Weinrib wrote. “If Tucker’s in play, the Astros are willing to return Cashman’s calls, and the lefty swinger is excited about an extension, the uncertainty surrounding Dominguez has to indicate availability.”
If the Yankees do land Tucker via trade, retaining him on a long-term deal would be a lot cheaper than it would’ve been to keep Soto. Spotrac estimates Tucker’s market value at seven years and $195 million.
