A fire Tuesday night at a senior center in Edison, N.J., left two people in critical condition and more than 70 displaced ahead of the holiday season, according to local officials.
More than 95 firefighters responded to the four-alarm blaze at the center, the Inman Grove Senior Citizen Residence, shortly after 6 p.m., officials said. Emergency responders encountered heavy smoke on the second floor of the building. The senior center was evacuated and the dozens of displaced residents were offered local hotel rooms, officials said.
“We are working through each individual senior’s needs and will make sure every senior is attended to,” the mayor of Edison, Sam Joshi, wrote in a Facebook post on Tuesday.
Officials said the cause of the fire was under investigation but that it was not considered to be suspicious.
“Our thoughts are with those affected by this tragedy,” Mr. Joshi wrote in a separate statement. He also thanked the emergency responders.
One of the people in critical condition was initially transported to the hospital as “a cardiac arrest fatal,” Mr. Joshi wrote in his Facebook post, but the patient regained a pulse, which the mayor called “a miracle.”
