You cannot tell me this wasn’t intentional.
Princess Diana’s nieces, Lady Amelia Spencer and Lady Eliza Spencer, attended the fashion awards in London on December 2 wearing black gowns remarkably reminiscent of a certain famous “revenge dress.”
The identical twins’ gowns were similar, though not identical, both featuring figure-skimming silhouettes and off-the-shoulder necklines—though Amelia’s plunging sweetheart neckline was slightly more similar to Lady Di’s famous look. But while Diana’s dress had a decorative train and a scandalous, above-the-knee hemline, the Spencers’s gowns fell all the way to the floor.
Even Amelia and Eliza’s accessories could be seen as a nod to their famous aunt. Both women wore diamond choker necklaces and understated earrings, which might evoke the pearl choker necklace Diana wore with her little black dress.
Diana’s “revenge dress,” which she wore in 1994, got as much attention as it did for two reasons. The first was that it was an unusually revealing choice for a member of the royal family, and the second reason is that she wore it the same night that then-Prince Charles confessed publicly that he’d been unfaithful to her during their marriage, per People.
Princess Diana’s nieces, now 32, would have been toddlers at the time that she stepped out in her infamous ensemble, and definitely wouldn’t have understood the context. Now, however, maybe they’re showing their aunt some belated solidarity. Or maybe they just liked the look.
