Not since 2014, when Rihanna arrived at the CFDA Awards in a completely sheer Adam Selman gown and matching headpiece, has the 36-year-old made this much of a splash while arriving at a fashion party. On December 2, the multi-hyphenate walked the red carpet of The 2024 Fashion Awards in a flashy vintage Christian Lacroix ensemble from the brand’s fall/winter 2002 collection.
RiRi’s partner, A$AP Rocky, was there too, looking dapper (though a little casual by comparison) in an impeccably tailored Bottega Veneta ensemble, which he accessorized with a leather tie.
But Rihanna, obviously, is the real showstopper here. With the help of her longtime stylist, Jahleel Weaver, the fashion plate modified the runway look, styling the electric blue coat over a corseted body suit and swapping opaque red tights for sheer black stockings. Her black leather opera gloves tie the whole thing together, and play nicely off Rocky’s leather tie. The complete look is giving Moulin Rouge meets Sully from Monsters Inc., and I mean that in the best way.
And we haven’t even gotten to the hat yet. It’s playful, over-the-top, and will likely be memed in a few hours’ time, if it hasn’t already been gobbled up by the fashion trolls and spit back out on X with a silly punchline. Of course, all jokes are made with love, because Rihanna is wearing the hell out of this outfit. Haters would be swallowed whole if they tried.
Will Rihanna’s hat stand the test of time, going down in fashion history alongside Pharrell’s Hat TM, or Billy Porter’s motorized topper? My money’s on yes. I’m also fairly certain that this is Rihanna’s boldest look of the year, which portends well for 2025. All I want for Christmas is more risk-taking fashion from Rihanna.
