The Fast movie franchise and Thanksgiving share a core concept: family. So it’s no surprise that star Vin Diesel took to Instagram to celebrate the holiday and his ongoing blockbuster series in the same breath — but it wasn’t exactly cracking-open-Coronas-at-the-backyard-bbq vibes.
On Thursday morning, Diesel gave a long-awaited update on the status of Fast X: Part 2, the next installment of the action-racing series. There has been little news about the status of the sequel since Fast X opened in theaters on May 19, 2023 to negative-skewing reviews, leaving many — including costar Tyrese Gibson as recently as this summer — to wonder if they’d ever get around to actually making the thing. Diesel’s Instagram post did not dispel any worry, with the generally upbeat star delivering rather dark remarks.
I got universal in one ear saying we need FastX2 by March 2026!
I have Concast in the other ear saying we need two movies to be the Finale!
Then the writer on Fast Five sent me this image and said we need to see DOM and HOBBS resolve their differences.
I just want to get back to real street racing, practical stunts… and a reunion of that beautiful brotherhood.
Happy Thanksgiving…
The post comes days after some cryptic ’gram updates from earlier in November, in which Diesel celebrated his Fast crew and teased that at least some practical car-stunt work was being done for Fast X: Part 2.
Having made $704 million worldwide, Fast X was a success and a sequel would be a logical priority for Universal — especially with the franchise’s 25th anniversary looming in 2026. But Fast X’s box office haul was a far cry from highs like Furious 7‘s $1.5 billion or Fate of the Furious’ $1.2 billion grosses. Based on Diesel’s update, it seems the studio and producers have their own priorities on how to inject some nitrous back into Part 2, which include getting Dwayne Johnson’s Hobbs back in the mix. But here’s yet another wrinkle: Johnson is currently filming the live-action Moana for Disney.
I’m starting to understand why Diesel is not having a great Thanksgiving.
Fast X: Part 2 does not currently have a release date.
