Since its launch in 2019, Apple TV+ has built an impressive library, particularly in the miniseries variety. One standout was The Last Thing He Told Me, a 2023 mystery thriller based on Laura Dave’s bestselling novel of the same name. The series immediately found an audience, earning the title of most-watched Apple TV+ limited series at the time, according to Variety.
After months of anticipation, fans finally got the news they’d been waiting for: The Last Thing He Told Me will return for a second season.
After making the announcement in March of this year, star Jennifer Garner recently shared an Instagram post, reuniting with co-stars Angourie Rice and the titular “he,” Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.
The caption read, “Well, well, well … look who we found. #TheLastThingHeToldMe Season 2 is in production!”
The first season of The Last Thing He Told Me follows Hannah Hall (Garner), who leads a seemingly perfect life with her husband Owen Michaels (Coster-Waldau), though she struggles to connect with her stepdaughter, Bailey (Rice). When Owen suddenly disappears, and both the FBI and a mob family start poking around, Hannah and Bailey are forced to come together and uncover the truth about the patriarch’s mysterious past.
While the seven-season installment ended on a relatively open note, between all the excitement, most fans were scratching their heads for where the next season would even go. After all, the show was based on a singular, one-off book.
But with the announcement, Dave, who also served as a co-developer for the series, revealed another reassuring update. According to a press release, an upcoming sequel, set for publication in 2025, will lay the groundwork for the TV counterpart.
“I’m over the moon to continue telling the story of Hannah and Bailey,” Dave said. “The response to The Last Thing He Told Me has been truly extraordinary, and I’m grateful to everyone who read and shared the book and made this possible.”
It’s unclear how Dave will expand the mystery, but fans can rest easy knowing that several key cast members will be returning. Along with Garner, Rice, and Coster-Waldau, David Morse will reprise his role as Owen’s father-in-law and Bailey’s grandfather.
The series is also looking to spice things up, though. Last month, Deadline announced that Judy Greer would be taking on an undisclosed role.
Additionally, Aaron Zelman will be joining the team behind the scenes as co-showrunner alongside Dave, her husband, Josh Singer, and executive Reese Witherspoon.
The first season of The Last Thing He Told Me is currently streaming on AppleTV+.
