Jay Leno, the comedian and former “Tonight Show” host, said he fell down a hill near Pittsburgh last Friday, leaving him with a broken wrist, a black eye and bruising on the left side of his face.
It was the latest in a series of accidents to befall him in recent years.
Leno, 74, said that rather than walk a mile and a half on a road to a restaurant, he decided to take a shortcut down a hill.
“Well, the hill doesn’t look that steep, let me take a … yow!” he told Inside Edition. “I hit a bunch of rocks. It was 60 feet.”
Leno said he had a broken wrist. He appeared in the Inside Edition video wearing an eye patch, which he lifted to show extensive bruising around his left eye and the left side of his face.
“It’ll be fine,” he said of his eye injury. “I’m not worried about it.”
Despite the injuries, Leno performed a scheduled comedy show a few hours later.
“The great thing about this age is you don’t learn from your mistakes,” Leno told TMZ. “You just keep doing the same stupid thing.”
Leno has had bad luck with injuries in recent years.
In 2022 he underwent surgery after sustaining significant burns to his face, hands and chest when a fire started as he was working on one of his cars in Burbank, Calif.
According to a 2011 article in The New York Times, Leno kept the cars in his extensive collection gassed up so he could drive them when he wanted. Chemicals from the gas and the fire probably caused the burns, a doctor said at the time.
A few months later, in 2023, he sustained multiple broken ribs, kneecaps and collarbone in a motorcycle accident not far from his Burbank garage. “A 72-year-old man driving an 83-year-old motorcycle. What could go wrong?” he quipped at the time.
Leno did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
