Comedian and talk show host Bill Maher criticized the Democratic Party‘s policy positions for alienating voters in this year’s presidential race, saying the party ultimately lost “a crazy contest to an actual crazy person,” during Friday’s episode of his show.
The episode of HBO‘s Real Time with Bill Maher, titled “Tough Love Dems” on YouTube, featured the comedian criticizing Democratic policies and decisions he said led to a Republican sweep of the White House, U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives, and a conservative-majority Supreme Court.
Last week, President-elect Donald Trump secured the popular vote and the Electoral College to win a second term. He carried all the swing states of Nevada, Wisconsin, Michigan, Georgia, North Carolina, Arizona, and Pennsylvania, earning 312 Electoral College votes to Vice President Kamala Harris‘ 226 and approximately 76.39 million votes to Harris’ 73.68 million.
Down the ballot, the Republican Party retained their majority in the lower chamber, and flipped the Senate, gaining control with at least 52 seats.
Just days ahead of the election, Maher alluded to voting for Harris despite not supporting all her policies, while also calling Trump a “mad king.” He also previously stated that Trump was “definitely going to lose” this year’s election.
On Friday’s show, Maher mocked the Democratic Party over social issues, and what he called an “aggressively anti-common sense agenda and s***** exclusionary attitude,” quipping that, “You just lost a crazy contest to an actual crazy person,” in reference to Trump.
He added: “Democrats have become like a royal family, that because of so much incest, has unfortunately had children who are re*******. And the same thing can happen to ideas, if they are also conceived in an atmosphere of intellectual incest.”
Newsweek has reached out to Trump’s team and the Democratic National Committee (DNC) for comment via email on Saturday.
Maher also repeatedly pushed for platform reform, telling the Democratic Party to “stop screaming at people to get with the program and instead make a program worth getting with.”
In a post on X, formerly Twitter, on Friday night, the talk show host shared the segment and wrote: “It’s amazing how an election loss, even as big as this one, still doesn’t put a dent in the thinking that lost it.”
On his Friday evening show, he said, “It’s important for America to have a center-left party and for that party to be competitive. And a good first step toward that goal would be to make the voters not want to punch you in the face.”
Maher concluded his monologue segment by saying, “The reason I’m so mad at the Democrats is because as a voter, the issues that were important to me were democracy and the environment. And now, there’s no one to champion or defend either of them.”
