A woman’s unique, ancient-history-inspired beauty routine has amazed viewers online, amassing more than 9 million views on Instagram in less than a week.
Beauty creator Ezgi Aslan, known on TikTok and Instagram as @melodyyaslan and @mmelodyaslan, respectively, has brought 5,000-year-old Moroccan beauty practices to the forefront, mesmerizing modern audiences with the simplicity and efficacy of ancestral wisdom in a November 8 post.
In the video, Aslan, 21, demonstrates how she lines her eyes with kohl and uses pigments from poppy and pomegranate to define her lips and cheeks. The clip shows the creator crafting a lip gloss by blending the pigment with a few drops of argan oil and later enhancing it to a lip tint by adding rose water.
“I believe that our ancestors’ wisdom on life is getting harder to hear because there is so much noise these days,” Aslan told Newsweek. “We’ve had access to all this new knowledge on beauty routines only in the last 100 years, but that’s not even a blip in our 300,000-year-old history.”
Aslan’s fascination with ancestral practices extends beyond beauty. After experiencing significant improvements in her mental and physical health by adopting a stripped-back lifestyle—eating whole, natural foods and using traditional beauty methods—she felt compelled to share her journey on social media.
After initially focusing on an unprocessed diet, Aslan pivoted to natural beauty secrets after a comment suggested she try ancient Aleppo soap instead of modern body soap.
“People commented the countries they wanted me to find ancient beauty secrets, and I made videos every day about them,” Aslan said. “This approach garnered millions of views and hundreds of thousands of followers, showing a widespread interest in our ancestors’ skincare and beauty practices.”
The creator attributes the popularity of these ancient routines to their simplicity and effectiveness.
“I think most women are tired of the 10-step routines with products filled with ingredients we can’t pronounce. For me, modern skincare caused more damage than good,” she said.
Aslan said her use of natural beauty products showed a noticeable, natural glow in her skin, a testament to the enduring efficacy of these time-tested methods.
“I am incredibly grateful and honored to relay the lost beauty knowledge of our ancestors to women of today,” Aslan said.
In her video, Aslan walks her followers through the historical contexts and benefits of the products she uses. Kohl, a natural black powder first used in Egypt, not only defines the eyes but also has properties that help clean the eye and promote lash growth. Aker Fassi, a Moroccan beauty product made from poppy and pomegranate, offers intense pigmentation and versatility, allowing users to create subtle pink hues or bold red lips.
Viewers have embraced Aslan’s content, and her growth on social media highlights an interest among many to reconnect with simpler, more natural beauty rituals.
“The reason these ancient beauty secrets work so well is that the information passed down through generations had to be effective,” Aslan said. “I get lots of messages from women daily saying how natural beauty products changed them for the better.”
She continued, “I feel like modern products usually artificially enhance the skin’s look, but natural products strengthen the skin itself.”
