The Boston Red Sox have approached the offseason conservatively for far too long and it’s time for the front office to make significant moves.
Despite Boston’s rotation holding its own in the first half of 2024, the Red Sox need to find ways to upgrade their arsenal significantly this winter.
An insider’s recent prediction could provide the Red Sox with the frontline starter they desperately need to help them return to the playoffs next season.
“But to pick just one, Boston is a team to watch,” Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer wrote Thursday when predicting where Blake Snell will sign this winter. “Its rotation needs an ace, and it should suit them that A) Snell isn’t tied to draft compensation and B) he likely won’t need a long-term deal. Signs with Boston Red Sox for 4 years, $140 million.”
Snell has logged a 76-58 record with a 3.19 ERA, 2.76-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio, .210 batting average against and a 1.22 WHIP throughout his nine-year career, during which he played for the Tampa Bay Rays, San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants.
After delaying his signing with the Giants last offseason till a few weeks before Opening Day, Snell struggled in the first half, looking like a shell of his former self on the mound.
However, the two-time Cy Young recipient rebounded tremendously — posting a 5-0 record with a 1.45 ERA, 3.8-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio, .133 batting average against and a 0.85 WHIP in 68 1/3 innings pitched for the Giants post-All-Star-break-this-season.
The two-time ERA title champion is one of the top starting pitchers in the league. He will cost Boston a pretty penny, but given how little Red Sox owner John Henry has spent over the past few seasons, he should be ready to open his wallet so that Snell can join the nine-time World Series champions this winter.
