Immutable and Sequence, two companies that support Web3 game development, announced a strategic partnership and co-branded technical integration to enable developers to build with Sequence’s technology on Immutable’s zkEVM chain.
Their common aim is to make it easy for game developers to adopt blockchain technology so it’s easier for players to enjoy Web3 games and let game developers focus on making fun games.
As a part of this partnership, Immutable is offering a new integration option for Immutable Passport — Embedded Passport, powered by Sequence’s embedded wallet. Additionally, Sequence will add support for Immutable’s marketplace contracts and Orderbook in its in-game marketplace technology. These integrations will allow developers to improve onboarding and monetization for their titles with gaming-native user journeys and interfaces.
This partnership brings together two of the most well-recognized leaders focused on Web3 gaming. The Immutable ecosystem is the largest in Web3 gaming and includes over 400 signed game developers who are leveraging Web3 technology to improve developer economics and reward players, including flagship titles like Gods Unchained, Illuvium, and Guild of Guardians.
“We are thrilled to continue upgrading the experience available to both gamers and developers on Immutable through this partnership with Sequence,” said Alex Connolly, CTO of Immutable, in a statement. “This marks a significant step forward for the web3 gaming space, and makes the choice of where to build even simpler for game developers.”
Since 2017, Sequence, owned by Horizon Blockchain Games, has pioneered Web3 game technology and is the creator of the first account abstraction smart contract wallet; the author of ERC 1155, ERC 1271, ERC 6492; and has seen over $5.3 billion of transactions powered by Sequence technology. Sequence enables thousands of developers, and its clients include big game publishers like Ubisoft and TapNation, a mobile game publisher with more than one billion downloads.
“Sequence and Immutable have grown up together in Web3 gaming from the industry’s earliest days,” said Peter Kieltyka, CEO at Sequence, in a statement. “This partnership lets us accelerate each other with the combined strengths of world-class developer solutions and a massive ecosystem to drive the potential of web3-enhanced games forward in the eyes of all developers and players.”
As part of this relationship, Immutable will offer licenses to its game developers who can customize and manage their Embedded Wallets through the Immutable Builder powered by Sequence, a low-code developer portal that equips creators with advanced analytics to measure and optimize their user acquisition, retention, player demographics, monetization, and more. Sequence is ready to integrate with Immutable today.
Sequence has about 65 people while Immutable has 230. Michael Sanders, cofounder of Sequence, said in an email to GamesBeat that the partnership required many months of discussions, brainstorming, and alignment. Both Sequence and Immutable are committed to accelerating Web3 gaming together, and it’s been a collaborative effort from both sides to sort out all the business and technical integrations, he said.
Asked about the significance of the deal, Sanders said, “Immutable has the largest ecosystem in web3 gaming with 400-plus signed games, and Sequence delivers the world’s leading development platform for web3 games. Together, we’re equipping game developers with the largest ecosystem and the ultimate toolkit to onboard players, boost monetization, and build next-generation gaming experiences.”
Regarding the specific tech components, Sanders said that with the Immutable Passport + Sequence Embedded Wallet integration, developers can leverage the most seamless, secure, powerful, and highest-converting wallet solution for games. The integration equips players with the best in-game and cross-game experiences, allowing them to move seamlessly across games, carrying items, achievements, purchasing power, and profiles from one title to the next, Sanders said.
“By supporting Immutable’s marketplace contracts and Orderbook with Sequence’s marketplace technology, developers can leverage powerful marketplaces that can be embedded directly into games, creating dynamic economic systems that benefit both players and creators,” Sanders said. “Players can trade items, collectibles, and rewards in real-time, enhancing the in-game economy and giving players new ways to engage with the games they love. Royalties enforced.”
