A dog owner from Australia called her dog’s name while he was right next to her, to see what he would do, and his hilarious reaction has left internet users in stitches.
In a viral TikTok video shared in October by @sara_jones95, the Australian shepherd named Maverick can be seen chilling on the floor with his owner when she suddenly calls his name, despite him being right there. Newsweek reached out to @sara_jones95 for comment via TikTok comments. We could not verify the details of the case.
Confused, the pup initially looks at her, as if saying “I’m here,” but the poster keeps pretending not to see him, so he immediately gets up on his paws and begins investigating every angle of the room, as if looking for himself, too. “I thought Aussie shepherds were meant to be smart,” reads the caption.
Australian shepherds are indeed a very intelligent dog breed; in fact, they are among the most intelligent of all canines, says a Vet Explains Pets article by Georgia-based veterinarian Jess Kirk.
She adds that these pups are not only extremely intelligent, which makes them easy to train, but also very quick learners, and always eager to please their owners.
An article by Dogster medically reviewed by Dr. Ashley Darby says that, despite their name, these pups are not actually Australian.
In fact, they were originally developed in the Western U.S. states, although they are thought to descend from Basque herding dogs in Europe.
You’ve probably seen one or more Australian shepherds with different eye colors, and that is totally normal. This unique trait is due to a specific genes that these pups carry, the same that causes dilute patches of pigment on the skin and hair.
Because they are so smart and energetic, Australian shepherds need lots of training and daily exercise, so if you are not looking for an active breed, they may not be the right pick for you, according to the American Kennel Club.
The video quickly went viral on social media and it has so far received over 5 million views and more than 850,000 likes on the platform.
One user, Rae.deo, commented: “He’s like ‘Damn, where am I?”
Iggy posted: “Don’t feel bad my guy … been trying to find my self for years.”
Yorkshire Aussie Lass added: “Just tried this on my border collie and she went and looked out the window for herself.”
