It looks like Euphoria fans aren’t the only ones who have been waiting for the raunchy teen drama to return to air.
Series stars Sydney Sweeney and Zendaya both commented on the state of the show in recent interviews for Vanity Fair‘s Hollywood Issue, where they touched upon Euphoria‘s imminent return to HBO after almost three years off the air. Sweeney admitted that the delay began impacting her career until she became a producer and began prioritizing her own projects.
“There were definitely a few projects that I had to pass on because I was supposed to be going back to Euphoria,” she told Vanity Fair. “But because I am producing now, I was able to say, ‘You know what? I don’t think this is happening. I’m going to put some of my own projects on the slate.’”
Sweeney revealed that the same thing almost happened to her summer blockbuster Anyone But You, the enemies-to-lovers romcom starring Glen Powell that became the talk of the town this summer.
“Euphoria was supposed to start filming, and I had another film that I was supposed to do, but we couldn’t get cleared and after a few weeks, I realized, This is not happening. So I put in full gear to make Anyone but You,” she said.
Sweeney said she still believes she’ll be able to “jump right in” when production resumes in January, despite the three-year hiatus.
Zendaya echoed a similar sentiment in her own interview with Vanity Fair, in which she dispelled any responsibilities regarding the ongoing delay in production, despite what previous reports may say.
“I will say, I have been off for a couple years, so not delayed because of my [schedule]…I’ve been open, just waiting,” she said with a laugh. “I’ve been waiting. I’m actually going to start filming a project soon before Euphoria, and I’m like, Man, I’m rusty. I haven’t been on a set in, like, two years almost. I’m a little bit terrified. I’m like, Can I even do this anymore? I don’t know.”
She confirmed production is slated to begin in January. But that appears to be all she knows about Season 3.
“I haven’t read anything yet, but I’m excited to see what everyone has been working on, and what the future looks like for Euphoria. I don’t really have much of an answer except for right now it’s set to start shooting in January,” she said.
HBO boss Casey Bloys recently confirmed that the entire main cast is slated to return for Season 3, which will be eight episodes long. Bloys also noted that they are “happy” with the state of the scripts. “We are shooting this season, so nothing has changed,” he said.
A release date has not yet been announced for Season 3. But, even with production slated for early 2025, fans likely should not expect to see new episodes of Euphoria until 2026. If this turns out to be true, it means it would have taken almost four years for the Sam Levinson project to return with a meager eight episodes.
