The owner of a deaf cat shared the feline’s reaction every time she realizes her mom is home, and users on TikTok can’t cope with how wholesome it is.
In a viral video shared on Saturday by @thewildhope, the 17-year-old tabby cat from Scotland, known as Mij, can be seen hanging out on the stairs, prepping her napping spot as she tries to enjoy a sunbeam reflecting on the carpet.
Meanwhile, the poster enters the house, but Mij can’t hear a thing. However, as the feline turns around to face the sun, she finally spots her owner and immediately gets up close to give her a proper greeting. “Watch my deaf cat realize I’m home,” reads layover text in the clip, and a caption says: “Straight [up] for cuddles as soon as she knew.”
Newsweek reached out to @thewildhope for comment via TikTok comments. We could not verify the details of the case.
Mij seems to have a very special relationship with her mom, but can cats actually love humans?
Georgia-based veterinarian Jess Kirk says on Vet Explains Pets that cats do not stick by us just because we provide them with easy food and shelter, but because they are able to form deep emotional bonds with us.
When your feline loves you, they will show it with behaviors such as rubbing their head against you, purring, meowing at you, trying to be near you at all times, and excitedly greeting you when you come home, like Mij did in the video.
Deaf cats may be unable to do some of the things that other felines do, and may also find it harder to communicate, but their ability to love you does not change.
A great way to communicate with your deaf cat effectively, according to VCA Animal Hospitals, is using visual cues to get their attention. For example, you can flash the overhead lights when you enter the room, or use a laser pointer (on the floor) to redirect their attention toward you.
You can also communicate with them via “touch and vibration;” for example, stomping on the floor to make your presence noticed, or gently stroking the feline to let them know you’re there.
The video quickly went viral on social media and has so far received over 15.7 million views and more than 2.9 million views on the platform.
One user, UhhhhSure, commented: “I don’t know why but digging at the carpeted stair corner is such a deaf cat activity.”
Jessi said: “She worked so hard to get that spot nap ready but that was forgotten as soon as she saw you. I love cats.”
Yousra added: “OHMYGOD my heart cannot take this.”
