No, your eyes aren’t playing tricks on you. Bad Monkey‘s Meredith Hagner was indeed in Shrinking Season 2, Episode 6 for a few seconds. And you’ll definitely see more of her as the season progresses.
The unexpected guest appearance was both a jaw-dropping surprise and a totally believable one for fans who know anything about the way showrunner Bill Lawrence operates.
“I have either a good habit or bad habit when I work with people and they’re talented â I try to work with them again and again,” Lawrence told Decider during an interview for his Apple TV+ series Bad Monkey earlier this year.
When Decider caught up with Lawrence again ahead of Shrinking‘s sophomore season, he confirmed our Hagner suspicions, saying, “You’re right. It’s an Easter egg, and you know that I like to use talented people who have been in my worlds before â especially if they’re kind and rock stars. Why wouldn’t I work with them again?”
So who does Meredith Hagner play on Shrinking Season 2? What lies ahead for her character? And what’s the deal with that Miss Congeniality poster hanging on Louis’ wall? Here’s everything we know, including comment from Lawrence and co-showunner/Season 2 guest star Brett Goldstein. (Just be warned, some Shrinking Season 2, Episode 6 spoilers lie ahead.)
Is Meredith Hagner in Shrinking? Who Is Louis’ Ex-Fiancé, Sarah?
Shrinking Season 2, Episode 6, written by Brett Goldstein, sets the stage for his most stirring scene yet as Brian (Michael Urie) takes Alice (Lukita Maxwell) to Louis’ (Goldstein) apartment for a spontaneous heart-to-heart. Towards the end of their emotional conversation, Alice looks at a photo in Louis’ living room and asks, “Who’s that woman?”
For a few seconds, Shrinking focuses on a framed photo of a blonde woman (Hagner) standing amongst flowers, smiling. Louis replies, “That’s Sarah. She was â she’s my fiancé.” Alice tells her she’s pretty, and after a moment of a Louis uncomfortably withdrawing inward, he swiftly changes the subject, leaving viewers curious about his relationship status and Hagner’s character.
Did the accident lead Louis and Sarah to call off their engagement? Was she in the car when the crash occurred? And if so, did she make it out alive?
Lawrence confirmed Shrinking fans will learn more about their relationship as the season progresses, which means that flashback scenes or perhaps even a present-day reconciliation could lie ahead.
Here’s hoping the answers to our questions about Sarah and Louis will be revealed, along with more info on Louis’ Miss Congenitally poster, of course!
Why Does Louis Have A Miss Congeniality Poster On Shrinking?
Particularly perceptive fans will also notice that a seemingly out-of-place beacon of light hangs on a wall in Louis’ somber home: a framed Miss Congeniality poster.
When pressed about Sandra Bullock’s 2000 film and whether or not it holds any deeper significance in Shrinking‘s story, Goldstein laughed and said, “Louis gets it. He gets the movie on a deep level.”
Casual fans of the show might take that as confirmation that the poster was simply placed in Louis’ home to give viewers a quick laugh or an eyebrow raise, but as someone born on April 25 (Miss Congeniality‘s “perfect date”), I also get the movie on a deep level and am choosing to believe we haven’t seen the last of it yet.
Whether or not Shrinking further unpacks Louis’ love of Miss Congeniality, we can’t wait to learn more about Goldstein’s compelling character as Season 2 progresses.
While you wait for Shrinking Season 2, Episode 7 to premiere on Apple TV+ be sure to read Decider’s interview with Goldstein for more insight into his dramatic role, major Episode 6 moments, and more.
New episodes of Shrinking premiere Wednesdays on Apple TV+.
