Houston Texans wide receiver Nico Collins is out from play tonight after being unable to return from a hamstring injury that previously sidelined him, NFL Insider Ian Rapoport reports.

Nico Collins suffered a hamstring injury during the Texans’ Week 5 victory over the Buffalo Bills and was subsequently placed on IR. At the time of the injury, the fourth-year wide receiver was leading the league with 567 receiving yards. Despite missing four games, Collins still holds the NFL lead with an impressive 113.4 receiving yards per game.
The player was briefly activated from injured reserve on Saturday, just one day after returning to the practice field. He was listed as questionable for Houston’s prime-time matchup against the Detroit Lions tonight and is now being reported as inactive.
The Texans went 2-2 in Collins’ absence, with the C.J. Stroud-led offense struggling, especially after wide receiver Stefon Diggs went down with a season-ending knee injury in Week 8. This means that Houston will be without its two top WRs, a terrible sign for the upcoming game.
Collins’ return would have been a significant lift for Houston, which is looking to avoid its first losing streak of the season. In just five games, he posted 32 receptions, 567 yards (leading the league), and three touchdowns. As the Texans prepare for their matchup against the first-place Lions (7-1), Collins’ absence could prove crucial.

After a successful college career at the University of Michigan, he was drafted by the Texans in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft. In 2023, he had a stellar season, setting a new career high in Week 4, recording seven receptions for 168 yards and two touchdowns. His streak continued in Week 13 against the Denver Broncos, where he exceeded those numbers with nine catches for 191 yards and a touchdown, contributing to the Texans’ 22–17 victory.
By Week 18, Collins was on fire in a must-win game against the Colts. He caught all nine of his targets for a career-high 195 yards, including a career-long 75-yard touchdown. His clutch performance helped the Texans secure a 23–19 win, clinching their first playoff berth since 2019.
Clearly, the continued absence of Collins will sting Texan fans, especially as it seemed that the wide receiver was so close to being back on the field. Facing off against the Lions without him won’t be easy.
