Vice President-elect JD Vance is the favorite to win the 2028 presidential election, followed by former first lady Michelle Obama, according to odds released Wednesday by two leading bookmakers.
It came after Donald Trump stormed to an election victory on Tuesday with at least 292 Electoral College votes. This figure is projected to rise as the Associated Press reports that Trump is also ahead in the swing states of Michigan, Nevada, and Arizona and is on track to win the popular vote for the first time.
U.K.-based bookmaker Betfair is offering odds of 7/2 of Vance (22.2 percent) winning the 2028 presidential election, ahead of Michelle Obama at 4/1 (20 percent) and California Governor Gavin Newsom at 11/2 (15.4 percent).
They’re followed by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis at 9/1, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton at 11/1 (8.3 percent), Tucker Carlson at 12/1 (7.7 percent), former Representative Tulsi Gabbard at 14/1 (6.7 percent) and Oprah Winfrey at 20/1 (4.8 percent).
Newsweek reached out to the offices of Michelle and Barack Obama and the Trump-Vance campaign for comment via online inquiry form and email, respectively.
Speaking to Newsweek, Betfair spokesperson Sam Rosbottom said: “The odds of Kamala Harris making a comeback for the 2028 campaign are an outside 40/1 (2.4 percent)—but eyes are on one familiar name for the Democrats. Michelle Obama is 4/1 to be the 2028 U.S. president.
“Trump’s number two, JD Vance, is the 7/2 favorite to take his place in the Oval Office in 2028.”
Bookmaker William Hill has the same top four as favorites to win the 2028 presidential election, with Vance leading 3/1 (25 percent). He is followed by Obama at 5/1 (16.7 percent), Newsom at 11/2 (15.4 percent) and DeSantis at 8/1 (11.1 percent).
William Hill spokesperson Lee Phelps said Trump had achieved a “landslide victory” over Harris.
“With Trump unable to challenge for a third term in 2028 due to the terms of the US constitution, we make his Vice President, JD Vance, the early favorite to win the 2028 US election, priced at 3/1,” Phelps said.
“As the Democrats lick their wounds after a bruising night of results, Michelle Obama, wife of former President Barack Obama, is 5/1 to lead the Democrats back to power in four years’ time.
“Gavin Newsom, Governor of California, is a slightly longer 11/2 shot to take the challenge to the Republicans and turn the tables.”
Due to the U.S. Constitution’s 22nd Amendment, which imposes a two-term limit for presidents, Trump will not be eligible to run for the presidency again. The only way around this would be to amend the Constitution, a process far tougher than passing standard legislation.
Trump’s second administration could include several of his most prominent supporters, including billionaire businessman Elon Musk and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who ran against him as an independent before dropping out of the race.
