Anna Kendrick made a splashy debut with her new project Woman of the Hour, which she both directed and starred in. But the actress revealed she’s noticed the film has gotten quite an interesting reception, notably from filmmakers she tried to work with years ago.
Speaking to Variety, Kendrick revealed that her phone has been ringing nonstop with calls from other filmmakers since she made her directorial debut on Netflix.
“It’s been really cool,” she said. “The coolest thing is some of the filmmakers who’ve reached out to me are people who I auditioned for 15 years ago, and they didn’t cast me. … It feels very full circle.” Kendrick refused to name any of the filmmakers.
Woman of the Hour follows the unbelievably true story of California serial killer Rodney Alcala, who appeared on a reality show called The Dating Game in the ’70s right in the midst of his ongoing murder spree. Kendrick stars in the film as The Dating Game contestant Cheryl Bradshaw, who unknowingly lands a date with the serial killer.
Kendrick noted how much she’s enjoyed seeing the online reception to the film, as well.
“It’s been amazing seeing people talk about it online, and women who are talking about the way that it related to their real lives,” she said.
“I’ve actually seen a bunch of women talking about watching it with their boyfriends or husbands, and the way that they’ve had to kind of explain what’s happening to them,” she added.
It looks like Kendrick has learned quite a bit from her experience directing the true crime thriller.
She has since shared some problematic experiences she’s had as an actress, including one time a director tried to embarrass her on set.
“I remember a director once, in a room full of 100 extras or something being like, ‘Hey, on this next one just try something. Just make something up. Just improv something,’” she recalled. “And I did it and then the director called cut and came over and, once again in front of 100 extras, was like, ‘Oof, let’s go back to the script!’”
The actress said it felt like a “power move” meant to “embarrass” her. “It was very icky,” she admitted.
But it looks like she’s on the lookout for her next project.
She told Variety, “I haven’t found anything that I’m as passionate about because I think I really hit the jackpot with Woman of the Hour — the script and the actors and everything about it.”
She added, “It’s been very daunting to try to find something that I care that much about.”
Woman of the Hour is now streaming on Netflix.
