Amy Robach put reality TV veteran Peter Weber on the spot when she questioned how much reality there was in that genre of television.
Weber, 33, is an alum of The Bachelor universe, including placing third on the 15th season of The Bachelorette and starring as the bachelor on season 24. Weber also appeared on the second season of The Traitors U.S.
He was a guest on Robach’s podcast that she cohosts with her partner, T.J. Holmes, on November 1 to discuss the trio’s preparations ahead of last Sunday’s New York City Marathon.
During the podcast, they spoke about Weber’s appearances on various reality shows. He said that he would not do another based on finding love, but had signed up to The Bachelor series in the hopes of finding a wife.
Then Robach asked, “Is reality TV reality?” and a nervous-sounding Weber replied with a laugh: “You’re gonna get me in trouble here.”
“I mean, it is. Listen, there’s obviously a certain level of production that goes into it—that’s just the nature of the show … but, no, truly like I can’t put any type of blame or anything on anyone for how stuff may or may not have happened,” he said.
“I’m insanely grateful for honestly for the whole experience—the good and the bad; and the bad, honestly, maybe even more than the good. I’m grateful for it just because I think the strength that I gained from that, the growth I’ve been able to gain from that.”
Robach and Weber also spoke about how some people go on reality TV to further their own media careers, but Weber said that was not the case for him, and he would never want to leave his job as a pilot at United Airlines.
“For me specifically, obviously it wasn’t career move; I was never going to leave flying. It [reality TV] was just going to be an additional job,” Weber said. “But a lot of people were cool leaving their job, and they were cool seeing where this jump and this leap of faith would kind of take them.
“Hopefully, maybe it would work out in a lasting relationship and everlasting happiness with your person. But, if it didn’t, the benefits and the rewards that can kind of come from putting yourself out there on reality TV and the opportunities that come about are pretty incredible for sure.”
Even though he rose to fame in The Bachelor universe, Weber recently said he felt he had more success on The Traitors.
“[It’s] just such a fun game. It’s just so mental and strategic, and it’s just so different from anything I’d ever done in my entire life,” he told Decider earlier this month. “And I think I had a lot more success in that aspect of reality TV than looking for love on reality TV. But it’s OK; I found my niche.”
