A woman who went scuba diving in the ocean came up for air to find something crawling in her hair.
Underwater videographer and owner of Kaimana Ocean Safari, Kayleigh Grant, lived in Kona, Hawaii where she runs her business with her husband Cam. The adventurer was scuba diving near her home with a group when she had a crab latch onto her hair.
“It’s pretty common for us to have larval (baby) crabs use us to hitch a ride in the deep open ocean,” Grant told Newsweek. “In this environment they are vulnerable to being eaten by larger fish so anything floating along (including us) becomes a safe haven for them.”
Grant posted a video of the tiny crab in her hair on Instagram, where it received over 44 million views after it was first posted on October 21. “Casually picking crabs out of our hair,” she wrote in the video’s caption with a series of crab emojis.
“POV: you feel something crawl on your scalp in the ocean,” the text overlay reads as Grant is seen feeling around her hair while under the water. She then comes up onto a boat where another person has to help her get the small crab off her head.
“I feel like I have sea lice,” she says in the video. “It’s like really dug in there.”
She explained to Newsweek: “It’s quite common but can definitely feel a bit unpleasant especially when they try to go into your ear.
“I have a friend who had one die in his ear. Luckily, he was able to remove it with tweezers.”
Grant, along with her husband, offers scuba diving tours of the waters surrounding Kona, Hawaii Island. The U.S. state is a popular destination for American citizens.
In 2022, Hawaii attracted over 7.7 million visitors from across the United States, far surpassing Hawaii’s population of 1.4 million residents.
Meanwhile, scuba diving proves to be a popular activity for Americans. According to Statista, over 2.4 million people took part in the aquatic activity in 2021.
Grant’s video received over 1,000 comments with people sharing their thoughts. @livfortheocean simply wrote: “No thank you.”
@joao_mmsouza said: “The calmest woman in the world, definitely.” Meanwhile, @aallabell commented: “My horrible dream.”
“New phobia,” said @esmerrbombaaerva. “He found a new home,” joked @heydromsk.
“Mermaids must be bald, little ones,” said @amaria.duarda.
A big chunk of commentors simply shared their thoughts with emojis, such as crying or puking faces.
